I think I represent a pretty novice user, although I suspect my level of
ignorance is far higher than most 'beginners'.

I would really appreciate some decent book recommendations on programming in
general. Although I'm able to follow the tutorial I'm using and picking up a
bit of ruby along the way, I'm ignorant about a lot of basic things (the
benefit of indenting for example) and most books i have come across seem to
have good details on the fundamentals of a particular language but don't
explain more basic issues.

In terms of presentations, a walk through of developing a basic
application/site from initial design through testing to use would be really
handy.

thanks also for the help! i realise now it was a pretty stupid problem but
you all helped me realise that and finally seeing the page without the
syntax error was pretty cool

Cheers,
Tom
