Actually, not so brilliantissimum.  I thought it worked when I first 
tried it but then realised on further testing that it doesn't quite.

When the user clicks "Save" in his browser, a fresh User object is 
created in which to store the details.  At this point the object still 
doesn't have an id (because it hasn't hit the d/b yet) and so the 
default values get set again.

I think James Adam's suggestion is probably the one I'll go with.
