This is a recommended read for anyone who wants to know why Lispers  
always look so smug ;)

Also anyone who wants to deep-geek how languages work (a good  
foundation if you want to abuse Ruby to the fullest) should keep an  
eye out for "Programming Languages: An Interpreter-Based Approach" by  
Samuel N. Kamin (1990, Addison-Wesley). It's a little out of date but  
there is a new edition in preparation that will hopefully be  
published this year.
