I'm not sure that we really need to be that serious about this.   
Having an application to work is merely a way to focus a group on  
particular subjects.  It's not so that we can have a 'successful'  
project.  The main point is that having something tangible to work  
towards will mean that meetings or discussion would have a natural  
structure.

We know that we start with designing and planning the application, so  
that would be the first topic.  If all we did was having one meeting  
where we get a database design, a bunch of people would learn about  
data modelling, entity relationships, normalisation etc etc which  
would give them a great grounding in what ActiveRecord is all about.

I do agree that time is obviously an issue for everyone but I don't  
think it will become a problem providing we keep things flexible and  
non-formal.
