Thanks Guys for the pointers...
The Mark Needham post was really useful. I moved my mac onto the 64bit
kernel and ran though it, although it didn't work first time. I figured out
that I had to update libxlst as well as libxml and then it all started to
work. So now finally playing around with rails3! Thanks again!

Try specifying the arch_flags in the rvmrc dotfile?
rvm_archflags="-arch x86_64"

IMHO, the reboot-your-computer-if-you-can't-do-x advice for rvm is to `rvm
implode` and install things from scratch if you find yourself scratching the
head and can't figure out what's what within five minutes of googling.
