Yet another Ruby job listing! We're looking for a bit of an all-rounder
really but Ruby & RoR dev is going to be the bulk of the work. We're
imaging someone looking for their 2nd job out of uni - that kind of
experience level.

Software Developer / Admin Role
Award-winning, mould-breaking, technology-focused start-up in the
residential property sector (running for 3 1/2 years) is looking for an
all round intelligent & disciplined software developer with some
sysadmin experience.
Candidates should have a couple of years real-world web development
experience on an Open-source platform (ideally Ruby on Rails & MYSQL
running on Redhat).
Working in a friendly small team, the successful candidate will be
working on all aspects of the system - design, implementation &
deployment - as such the role is ideal for a creative individual who
will take initiative and contribute ideas that will help evolve the
business.
The bulk of the role is being a software developer, keeping the existing
system running while adding new functionality and reworking flawed parts
of existing system. They will be expected to take a share of the
sysadmin responsibilities.
System briefly comprises an external customer-facing website, an
internal data management system and analytical technology.
Key Responsibilities:
* Maintain existing RoR applications - not just bug fixes but adding
in new functionality and taking ownership of existing parts
* Maintain production Redhat servers
* Writing data-import / data-manipulation scripts
Key Skills:
* OO Programming (Ruby & Ruby on Rails)
* Ability to learn a large, complex system quickly
* SQL (MYSQL)
* HTML / Javascript / CSS
* Version Control (SVN)
* Unix (Redhat)
* Webserver (Nginx / Passenger)
* Excellent communication skills
* 2:1 degree in CS-based discipline
Nice-to-haves:
* Third-party API integration (Google Maps, Google Chart)
* Experience of handling scaling issues
* BIND
* TDD
* Agile development experience
NOTE: Candidates without Ruby or Ruby on Rails experience will still be
considered if they can demonstrate OO programming experience and an
ability to pick up new languages quickly.
35 hours per week
25 days holiday

£33K+
