[LRUG] How to script OS X apps with Ruby?

Hola El Rug,

What's the state of play these days of scripting OS X apps with Ruby?

I ask because I currently use an Applescript to move email messages from one Mail.app folder to another, but it generally takes 2-5sec to execute.  That's not very quick for a 21st century computer.  I'm hoping for no good reason that if I replace the Applescript with a Ruby script it might run quicker...  But I'm not sure how to go about doing this.
