Where would I find any core dumps?

/var/crash doesn't exist.

Thanks, though sadly it didn't help.

I doubt this was a disk-full error because the fullest partition is only 8% used, and when the box came back up it happily wrote to all the various logs.

/home  362MB of 1.7TB used (0%)
/      5.94GB of 1020GB used (1%)
/boot  44MB of 496MB used (8%)

I can't believe temp files filled the disk up and then all vanished on restart.
