A message to my peers,

In what has undoubtedly been our most turbulent week at *evvnt *I’d like to
use this opportunity to explain my thoughts, actions and regrets.

Late on Monday evening I sent a message to the London Ruby User Group
(LRUG), a community of developers that I am just getting to know, as we are
currently recruiting Ruby developers ourselves. The message, intended as a
pseudo-job ad, poked fun at some of the stereotypes of the male developer &
what makes them tick – a stereotype so old-fashioned that it probably need
not be regurgitated any further. Although at the time of writing (1am on a
Tuesday morning) it was off the cuff and felt light hearted, the feedback
from my peers and the wider tech community has shown me that my comments
far overstepped the line.

My comments were not only disrespectful and inappropriate towards the
talented female developer community but also to men in the industry – to
pigeonhole them under archaic stereotypes is just as damaging. Although
what I wrote was in no way a suggestion that we had female developers being
offered, as some have suggested, as a ‘perk’, or that we would selectively
hire staff members by anything other than their professional ability, I
deeply regret my comments for being distasteful and out of line – for which
I can only apologise.

It’s now up to the wider community to cast judgment on the matter. I hope a
lapse in judgement does not define my character, as it does not represent
my sentiments or morals nor the awesome growth company that is evvnt. I
have always held the upmost respect for my staff whether past, present or
future and I’d welcome anyone to stop by for an ‘expresso’, earl grey tea
or cold beer to meet myself & our team.

With regards and regrets,

Richard Green
