*** Blurb about us and why you would enjoy it:

The Government Digital Service (GDS) is part of the Cabinet Office,
which sits at the centre of government to ensure Her Majesty’s
Government runs effectively.

We're a multidisciplinary team of developers, designers, policy
experts and more, responsible for the digital transformation of public
services. We were formed by Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis
Maude in response to Martha Lane Fox's report, which demanded
'Revolution, not evolution' in digital services. We do this by
relentlessly focusing on the needs of the user.

In the last year, GDS has:

· built GOV.UK, the simpler, clearer and faster home of
services and information for UK citizens and winner of the 2013 Design
of the Year - http://designmuseum.org/exhibitions/2013/designs-of-the-year-2013
· coordinated the delivery of the UK government's digital
strategy - http://publications.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/digital/
· published a service design manual containing guidance for
teams throughout the civil service
· worked with other government departments to complete
discovery on 25 services that are being transformed to be “digital by
default” and begun building alphas and customer facing betas of those
services

To find out what else we've delivered, visit http://digital.cabinetoffice.gov.uk

We want to expand our team of outstanding developers to help GDS and
the rest of the UK government build and run great digital services for
the people of the UK. Candidates must have strong skills in frontend
or backend web developer (or both) and be ready to quickly get to work
within a multi-disciplinary team of developers, designers, editors,
analysts focused on one or more of GDS’ products or projects.

At any one time GDS has a variety of projects in progress and over
time there will be opportunities to move around those projects
building up a range of skills and helping us share knowledge across
the organisation and around government. Day-to-day you will be
responsible for working with that team to design, create and improve
new and existing products, platforms and transactions across
government.

The main responsibilities of the post are:

Building web and mobile products to serve a variety of citizens' needs.
Implementing APIs for internal and external use.
Building up a useful, robust automated test suite to support a
Continuous Deployment environment.
Being involved in the wider web development community, identifying
good practices we can adopt and sharing our experiences
Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team, both
developers and non-developers

As part of this role you will be expected to participate in the 2nd
line in-house support and Out-of-Hours support rotas. The Out-of-Hours
support rota involves being in "on call" status in support of some
part of the GDS technical platform/infrastructure on evenings and
weekends for one week, on average once every 8 weeks. An allowance is
payable for your involvement in the Out of Hours support and a further
hourly payment is made for any duties you may be called upon to
perform whilst being on call.

If you'd like to discuss anything about the role, the team, the
culture, the application and interview process - you know where I am.
If you'd like to apply direct too that's fine, if you drop me a note
to let me know you have I can track and update you through the process
as best I can.

Cheers
Thayer
