[LRUG] Fake Candidates

It's always worthwhile tweeting or searching Fake Candidates (https://twitter.com/FakeCandidates) - they try to keep a list of the fake names bandied about. It usually is a dodgy recruiter to be honest, trying to pick up easy business.

Hello,
We are looking for an individual or small company to partner with for the development of Guilty Pledgers <http://www.guiltypledgers.com/>.
Guilty Pledgers is a fundraising Spotify app (the world?s first) and was recently covered in Wired <http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-03/21/guilty-pledgers> and the Guardian <http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/mar/04/guilty-pledgers-spotify-charity-app>
.
We are a not-for-profit, but we do have funds. We?re looking to find an on-going relationship with developers who are as excited about this idea as we are.
Guilty Pledgers comprises of a Spotify app and a web app. The client (Spotify + guiltypledgers.com) is built in Coffeescript with the Backbone framework. Stylesheets are SASS based, using the Compass framework. The app can be run in the browser with Rack, or built for Spotify with a simple Rake task.
The real-time aspect of the client uses web sockets (provided by Pusher), and there are a range of other HTML5 features used (such as the file API for the real-time image preview).
The API and Admin are a single Ruby and Rails app, using a MySQL database.
You will need to have advanced knowledge of MVC javascript, SASS and HTML5.
The Ruby elements are a lot more simple, so a team with limited Ruby experience would still be able to pick this up.
If this interests you, please get in touch ?> hello at guiltypledgers.com.
We?d love to meet you. Being based in London is preferable but not vital.
Thanks
Andy, Katy and Ben

Following on from the recent thread about perm salaries vs contract rates, I thought I'd jot down some thoughts about what would convince me to go perm after several years as a contractor. Here's a little list:
- MEANING. The opportunity to work on products that feel like they're objectively worth building, as opposed to just being yet more busy-work.
It's very nice to feel that you're making somebody's life better (even just
*slightly* better) by doing what you're good at.
- LEARNING. A culture where the human instinct for learning and creativity is respected and embedded, and considered as a basic need for all employees.
- FLEXIBILITY (time and space). Some tasks lend themselves to collaboration between multiple people in a shared space; others lend themselves to focused, uninterrupted concentration. I'd like the flexibility to be in the right place for the task at hand, as much as possible. And sometimes (actually quite often), I'd like to be able to work "weird" hours in order to do some or all of the following: pick up my kids from school, go for a long run, practise guitar, fix my bike, read a book, write lengthy and unsolicited rants to the LRUG mailing list.
- TRUST. As far as I can see, the main thing getting in the way of a lot of employers offering flexility around hours and location is that they don't trust their employees not to abuse their freedom. The thing is that most good developers actually *want* to do good work, and the focus should really be on facilitating that. If they also want to look at Facebook sometimes, well, what of it? And at the end of the day, whether they're in the office every day from 9 to 6 or not, it's pretty easy to work out if the quality and quantity of someone's work is unsatisfactory. Github doesn't lie ;-)
- PEOPLE. Inasmuch as you have to spend the bulk of your waking life collaborating with other human beings, they should at least be awesome.
Y'know... smart, interesting, fun, kind, considerate, incredible taste in music, that sort of thing. This isn't really much of a consideration as a contractor, because in all likelihood you're not going to be working in the same place for more than a few months; however for a perm job I think it's pretty important.
- ENGAGEMENT. Roles vary, but in most contracts there's very little opportunity to contribute to the growth of a product/team other than in a fairly narrow technical way. You are there to churn out code, not offer your opinions as to how to improve the process, better engage customers, help provide leadership, drive out requirements, etc etc. A more rounded, varied and interesting working life would be a decent reason to go perm.
- MONEY. I'm not going to lie, it's a major consideration. Typical perm rates for senior Ruby devs in London seem to be around 60% of the equivalent income for a contractor. If it were more like 75%, I think a lot more contractors would go perm.
Do other contractors think similarly?
Cheers,
Carlos

Hi there,
It has been bought to my attention today that somebody is using a slightly modified copy of my CV under the name "Marc Davies" with the contact number 07766089796 and email address pixamix at hotmail.com.
I was unable to trace these details back to anyone person and the phone number went to voicemail when I called.
I assume it is another recruiter (IS IT YOU?) attempting to find new clients so if this one drops in your mailbox, be aware!
I will take this as some kind of compliment that they chose my CV :)
Happy LRUGing

I had a Marc Davies / pixamix at hotmail.com CV sent through from CWJobs.co.uk.
I google-stalked Marc Davies to try and look up github activity etc, but
couldn't find anything and so ignored it.
Yay, recruiters.

Ah, gotta love them recruiters.
On days like this my thoughts drift to one of my more evil pet projects: a
twilio phone menu labyrinth (at the end of my "HR Department" number)
designed to torment whatever recruiter calls it for a few minutes before
connecting them to another recruiter on the blacklist.

Don't be so quick to assume it's an evil (or otherwise) recruiter, I've got
anecdotal evidence of identity fraud in the IT space by an 'applicant'
going to interviews, getting a job offer, signing and getting back their
countersigned employment contract, then using that as collateral to build a
fake ID and then disappearing completely (presumably on to making the next
new identity).

Quite a few of these exist. My favourite being one that ends with a

It has been bought to my attention today that somebody is using a slightly modified copy of my CV under the name "Marc Davies" with the contact number?07766089796 and email address pixamix at hotmail.com.

Here we go... this one by @atechmeida. Call them on 01202 901 222,
option 9 (tho listen to the options first to make it funnier). Don't
worry - no humans involved.
