All excellent recommendations here.
Every now and then I also find "The Ruby Programming Language" (
http://books.google.co.uk/books/about/The_Ruby_Programming_Language.html?id=rbY5mz-_VdQC&redir_esc=y)
very useful: despite being written for 1.9 it is a good reference for the
fundamentals.
