Solved the cert problem by manually downloading and installing a global 
root cert. Should this really be necessary?

The second problem persists, ie. rubygems-update-2.6.8 fails with:

ERROR:  While executing gem ... (TypeError)
     no implicit conversion of nil into String

... and isn't addressed in the linked article.
