I suppose suggesting that you restore from your latest backup wouldn't 
go down well?  ;-)

Can you give some clues about your platform?  Which Linux are you using? 
  Which shell are you actually using (bash or zsh)?  How did you install 
Rails and Ruby?

It makes a big difference whether you are using system supplied 
components or, for instance, you are using rvm.
