Job Description
The IT team is at the start of a significant period aiming at simplifying our architecture, improving the performance of our applications, and adapting our working practices.  We’re looking for an experienced Head of Engineering to work in a hyper collaborative and creative environment.
We work in a collaborative environment using agile techniques, where you will be working with different departments to come up with the best possible solutions.
Our goal is to have a strong Ruby on Rails architecture serving all of our customer-facing users, whilst bit-by-bit we re-architect and modernise our Perl Back-Office applications which serve our colleagues.
The Development team consists of QA, Business Analysts and Developers. Our ideal approach to project work is iterative, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between a self-organising and cross-functional team.
Due to the changes listed above the Development team is in the Forming stage, where Ruby and Perl are learning how to work together to combine old with new, and move towards more agile, sustainable working practices which you can help form.
Our tech stack includes Perl, Ruby, Rails 5, Rails 6, Webpack, React.js, Redis, Terraform, AWS, New Relic, Ansible, Oracle, Postgres and Boomi.
Personal development is sought after, you will be given an opportunity to build Business and Personal Objectives against what makes you tick. Tech conferences, talks, workshops and training can be built into your development plan.
You will be responsible for shaping people, technology and process across our frontend, backend, integration, and data engineering teams – around 10 people in total. You will define coding standards including secure coding practices, lead architectural process and design, set the bar for peer reviews, ensure our CI/CD pipeline assures code quality, and mentor and drive members of the software engineering team so they know what ‘good’ looks like.

We’ve started a transformational journey where we’re reviewing our architecture and taking it to the next level in order to achieve organic growth, performance and stability. Full-stack technical knowledge focussed on AWS technologies and managed services, data transformation, and SOA would be beneficial.

Requirements and Responsibilities

  *   Have a technical background and a good understanding of development best practices
  *   10+ years’ engineering experience, most with Ruby on Rails
  *   Defined or worked with coding standards including secure coding principles (full stack - UI through to database)
  *   Defined or worked under a peer review framework
  *   Define git merging and branching strategies
  *   Drive software architecture and its governance across the entire technology stack – Ruby, Perl and Boomi integrations with 3rd party software
  *   Drive the use of unit tests and test-driven development
  *   Drive continuous build and quality assurance tooling
  *   Have a mature and experienced attitude and be respected by the team
  *   Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  *   Able to listen to people during 1-2-1’s and devise solutions for their issues
  *   Have strength of character in being able to enforce good working practices
  *   Able to collaborate with other parts of the business to understand the product
  *   Work within an agile framework, contributing to ceremonies
Nice to have

  *   Have experience working with Squads
  *   Be versed in working with Jira and Confluence
