I guess one thing to ascertain is what type of beginners we have? As I
see it, there are two types:

- developers who know another language and want to now learn Ruby/RoR
- people who don't know any languages and are starting with Ruby/RoR

Good point.

I think they'd need different approaches. For example, the subjects
you've suggested are already too advanced for me but probably aren't
for others. I could do with a really basic introduction, but that
might be too ground-level for others.

Maybe as an alternative to my suggest-a-subject approach we could have some small group tutoring sessions?
E.g. someone takes a group of the new to programming beginners and they all huddle round a desk with a laptop and go through some excercises or just answer questions that the group want answered. Someone else can do the same with the new to ruby group, and then someone else with the new to RoR group, etc...

Of course, when I talk about groups here, it doesn't matter if the group is just one person, we want everyone to get *something* out of the evening. Remember, LRUG is run pretty much on a "if someone asks for something, or volunteers to do something, we'll do it" basis, I don't see why this shouldn't apply to these "beginner"* sessions too.

Muz

* That's "beginner" in quotes, as I'm fairly sure that everyone would benefit from hearing someone else explain some aspect of ruby, even if it just makes lets them confirm their own understanding.
