Hi Tim,

I feel that the two weeks are designed to be as beneficial for the person as possible - we're keen that they have a good experience with us and learn about how we work. There's also some element of mentoring involved, where we can show them around the way we would approach different challenges.

Having run successful placements with design and film graduates (some of which have come inboard) and it seems that those that participate have really enjoyed their time with us, and the projects they've been involved in.

And I whole heatedly agree about your idea of open sourcing code - it's something we're looking at with a couple of planned projects.

Kind regards,
Ian

2009/3/5 <chat-request@lists.lrug.org>
Hi everyone,

I'm Ian, and I head up the online and social software work we do at
thinkpublic <http://thinkpublic.com>. We're interested in how the web and
social software holds huge potential for improving public services. We work
with an exciting range of organisations
<http://thinkpublic.com/clients.php>to explore this, coming up with
new ideas, tools and services. We're
looking for someone who likes developing (preferably in HTML, CSS and Ruby
on Rails) and is interested in gaining work experience within our team. If
this sounds like you, why not get in touch, please include a CV, examples of
recent web work and a few words about why you'd like to work with us.

Thanks for your time,
Ian
Hmm, I'm a little cynical about this - The culture of unpaid work
placements (which are pretty much almost mandatory for finding a paid
job later) has become commonplace in plenty of other industries - I
don't think it's particularly valuable to anyone apart from the
companies getting skilled workers for free, and i'd hate to see the
same cultrure become prevalent in software development. Is there any
particular reason (apart from budgetary considerations) that's
stopping you from hiring a paid employee? If paying for a skilled
programmer is impossible for whatever reason, have you thought about
open-sourcing your code and building a community of contributing
developers around it as an alternative? To my mind, that would provide
better incentives for skilled people to contribute, and would lead to
a broader skillset working on your code.

Cheers,

We had young Alex MacCaw 'intern' at Aegis for a week or so, and then
again as a paid slave/junior for a few months at Reevoo. Once we beat
some of the precociousness out of him, I think everyone found it a
useful experience. The boy still wont write tests though

I couldn't comment on his actual salary, but I don't think it was a
pittance.

Seems like industries can perpetuate the 'unpaid work experience'
where the demand for jobs is much higher than availability. I'm not
sure that's the general case in ours, so I'd be surprised if the
practice took off.
A slight tangent, but have you heard about and/or are you getting involved
in Rewired State [1]? It seems relevant to what you are trying to do.
