I'm thinking we can work on a search app to find UK rubyists, maybe visualise on a google map or do some graph analysis.
We've had two generous offers so far to host the event:
- http://www.wordtracker.com in Kentish Town
- http://tribesports.com in Hoxton
Can you reply if you can attend on Thursday please?
Hi all

I had to miss Ruby Golf last week as I had a prior commitment, so I'd really
love to come, though I'm not a professional Ruby developer (yet) and I fear
my skills may be slightly below par. However, it sounds like I could learn a
lot from the event. Any evening between Monday and Thursday is fine by me,
especially Wednesday and Thursday.

Out of curiosity (I'm fairly new to this) are there any plans for the day
yet? Is it going to be another competitive event (like Ruby Golf) or do you
guys have something more collaborative in mind (along the lines of everyone
pulling together to solve an interesting problem)?

Cheers
Hi Aleksandar

Yeah, it certainly does sound interesting, though I've never been to a Code
Retreat myself and can't vouch for the effectiveness of the format. From
what I gather (correct me if I'm wrong), the idea is to be given a set of
problems of increasing difficulties in a certain amount of time, at the end
of which solutions are compared and people learn from different approaches
to the problem. I've read accounts of people doing this sort of thing and
from what I can remember they were all very enthusiastic about it, so as I
said I'd definitely be interested. I'll stay tuned for locations and dates.
I've been to the Python dojo a few times and really enjoy the "sit down and code on a problem" format.
One of the things the Python guys do is to limit the number of people who can go to a single event. I suspect this is because there's only so much room in the office they use, but it also makes the evening feel a little more personal. It's just a bummer if you want to go and don't manage to book a place on eventwax fast enough...
Oh, and, the company who provides the office sponsors the evening with beer and take away pizza, so everybody stands around getting to know each other at the beginning.
There are plenty of ruby companies in London, I wonder if these sorts of
meetings could rotate through multiple companies / venues. Everyone can
offer to run one and reduce the burden on their company and hopefully more
people would attend if it's in difference places each time (overall, rather
than on a given night). The downside is of course that it has an increased
effort on the part of the organiser to find a company each time.

Speaking of which, do we need an "organiser" to keep momentum on this? And
if so, do they want a place on lrug.org to talk about these things?
