<div>If you want to use foreign servers & services to store customer data there are ways around it under data protection.</div><div><br></div><div>US companies can certify as 'Safe Harbour' <a href="http://export.gov/safeharbor/">http://export.gov/safeharbor</a> that will allow for transfer of data under data protection from the EU <> US. </div>
<div><br></div><div>For instance MailChimp is complies with the EU Safe Harbor framework and for added bonus is also registered with the UK Information Commissioner. <a href="http://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/">http://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/</a> (see points X. & XI.)</div>
<div><br></div><div>So as far as I'm aware this allows you to transfer customer data to Mailchimp's US servers. I also checked with Rackspace a few years back and their US based cloud hosting did comply with EU Safe Harbor.</div>
