Previously I have always worked for big clients with several developers, or very small ones who didn't care so this problem has never arisen. However my current project is big enough that it'll need constant support but too small to warrant several developers and I have been wondering what should happen when I go away.

I thought about getting another developer to know the system but it would take a while for someone to get familiar enough with it to fix things, and I wasn't sure if this would be more hassle than it's worth. The Rails stuff itself is simple enough but setting someone up so they can deploy via Chef to EC2 instances etc is fiddly.

That aside though, possibly I can cover you when you go away as my time is fairly flexible.

On Thu, Feb 16, 2012 at 10:49 AM, Jonathon Horsman <jonathon@arctickiwi.com> wrote:

What cover do you provide your clients when you go away on holiday?

Typically I take my laptop with me, but given that I'm going to be up a mountain I will lack the connectivity and motivation to answer support queries.

Would any LRUG members be willing to form an informal support partnership where they would receive support queries and invoice at a pre-agreed rate for a set time?

This is really for client piece of mind, as I've never had anything require immediate attention in the times I've been away.

Likewise when pitching to some clients for new build projects they are concerned about cover when dealing with an individual freelancer. More than once I've been asked the 'hit by a bus' question and don't have a suitable answer. So I see this partnership covering new development projects too.

Does this resonate with anyone?

Cheers

--
Jonathon Horsman
Director - Arctic Kiwi
Mobile: 079 42366038
