These days when I'm looking for programmers to work for me, I'm trying to assess whether they are pragmatic and have a good understanding of value. The best programmers in my experience have an understanding of what the business value of the feature they're working on is, and will put in the appropriate amount of effort for that feature.
</div><div><br></div><div>The only way this can be learned is through experience. It's not something that is or can be taught in school. If a recent grad has this skill, it's because they've been programming for years outside the classroom and the requirements of their courses. </div>
