If you are running leopard, maybe you could try this: http://rails.aizatto.com/2007/11/28/taming-the-autotest-beast-with-fsevents/
Using Leopards FSEvents to respond to changes, rather than polling for
changes. I haven't actually tried it but it looks trivial to setup.
