[LRUG] Code samples: To do or not to do

Since the discussion has no strict limitations regarding which aspects of
the topic we talk about, I thought about introducing academic
qualifications.

I am from Greece but I study CompSci in the UK. One of the reasons that I
decided to do so is the fact that the british university that admitted me
is considered (by league tables, world rankings, etc) way better than the
greek one. However, I have been always wondering of how much importance
this is, especially in a field like computer science. I followed your
discussion until now and what I got is that personal projects and/or
contribution to projects other than your job play a vital part on the
decision making of employers. So, the question is: If you are not
interested in becoming an academic, does graduating from a top-15
university give you extra points in comparison to someone that graduated
from a university ranked, let's say, 35th, but who has other work to
demonstrate as well?

In addition, does the same apply to companies? Does a job in a really good
company in the past help when it comes to applying in another company?

Hope I am not ruining the flow of the discussion!

Sebastian
