Hello.

When I went to Scotland On Rails, I had a chat with many people who had
interests in Mobile app development, mostly iPhone.

Since Jruby started initial support for Android (
http://www.infoq.com/news/2009/02/jruby12rc1-android-support), it might be
good timing to start looking into Android framework, too.

Carl who also attended Scotland On Rails is organizing Android User Group
meetup, and he will give introduction to Android development framework next
week.

Not sure if registration at skills matter are fully booked or not, but
please try to register if you are interested.

If you don't have any Java background (like myself), here are few useful
links.

"Java vs Ruby" cheat sheet

"Head First Java" book from google book search

PS: If you are just interested into iPhone development, Stanford university
opened their lecture video for free at
http://www.stanford.edu/class/cs193p/cgi-bin/index.php .There is also London
Iphone developer meetup if you search inside LinkedIn.

Thanks.

Makoto

Hello,

In the last couple of meetings, I discussed the setting up of a
workshop/project revolving around Android. My intention was to start a
community based project and have monthly talks and presentations. There will
be tutorials and code jams! Maybe even some battles with the iphone/J2ME
user groups. Luckily, about 2 weeks ago, I got in touch with Natalie from
SkillsMatter.

I am happy to announce the birth of the android user group @ skills matter.
The user group will be focus on the technical aspect of Android. The
intention is to build up the developer community through training and
workshops.

I decided to merge the first workshop with the meetup as the first topic
won’t be to technical. We will give an introduction to the Android platform,
compare it to others and try to convince developers that they should care!

In the future, I will keep both meeting. The meetup.com one will be held on
the 2nd Monday of each month, while the user group on the 3rd Thursday of
each month (not written in stone). The user group will stay technical while
the meetup will be more about meeting interesting people around a beer.

# Ensure readers know about the registration ;)
