Hi Anthony,-

the incoherency of the recruiter's request aside, can you not actually code
both? If so, why not apply and sort it out with the company itself?

This kind of incident used to irk me as well, now I've started dabbling
heavily in front-end development because it is good for prototyping
purposes. So I can actually understand where the companies are coming from.

It is annoying they don't understand that as a general rule you get less
quality with more diversification of skill - however the Rails community has
a strong culture of paying much attention to the look and feel of
interfaces, which implies being front-end proficient. (I guess it's all that
37signals legacy). So in this particular case it might not be as bad as when
they ask:

"PHP, Ruby on Rails, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and oh, some bit of Cobol and
Linux sys-admin would be lovely thanks".
