Hmm, I'm a little cynical about this - The culture of unpaid work
placements (which are pretty much almost mandatory for finding a paid
job later) has become commonplace in plenty of other industries - I
don't think it's particularly valuable to anyone apart from the
companies getting skilled workers for free, and i'd hate to see the
same cultrure become prevalent in software development. Is there any
particular reason (apart from budgetary considerations) that's
stopping you from hiring a paid employee? If paying for a skilled
programmer is impossible for whatever reason, have you thought about
open-sourcing your code and building a community of contributing
developers around it as an alternative? To my mind, that would provide
better incentives for skilled people to contribute, and would lead to
a broader skillset working on your code.
Cheers,
Tim
