[LRUG] Helping disadvantaged kids learn to code

Hey Stevie,

While my development ability is very amateur at best, I've got some free
time to dedicate so let me know if I can help out in a
recruiter/sales/social media capacity. In a past life I used to be a drug &
alcohol counsellor for under 21s with substance misuse issues so I've got a
fair bit of experience engaging difficult young people if that's helpful.

Best, Louis

"Louis found my dream job for me. He took a lot of time to get to know me
and what I was looking for. He's obviously got a lot of connections and was
able to offer me a variety of roles. Louis actually knows what he's talking
about when it comes to Ruby-on-Rails, which is pretty much unique for a
recruiter. He gave me advice on what course of action is best for me, helped
me rewrite my CV as I was underselling myself and prepared me for my
interviews. Highly recommended!" <http://uk.linkedin.com/in/louisbeardsley>

Hello LRUGers,

I had a meeting today with a chap from the charity RichMix, they're offering
free courses to 14-18 year olds in August on how to build web apps. I know
many of you are passionate about paying it forward to the next generation
from your participation in SideKick Studios DoJunior events. The kind of kid
this course is targeting is typically very underserved by any existing
initiative, and is completely oblivious to these kind of opportunities. A
lot of these kids feel disenfranchised and helpless by their perceived lack
of opportunities, imagine the difference it would make to their self-esteem
and to the paths they choose in life if they knew that their background
didn't matter? If they knew that the ability to cut code is all they need to
have a exciting and rewarding career. Without overstating it, it could
change lives.

These courses are free to kids, but they have a budget to pay instructors.
Please drop me a line if you are interested in helping.

Enjoy your weekend

Cheers

S
