I've been very happy with Postmark - http://postmarkapp.com/ (https://postmarkapp.com/servers)

Extremely easy to use from Rails, can start off using it as an SMTP server and then switch to using their API for more advanced features (attachments, tagging) with ease.

Cheers.

A bit of research throws up a number of service providers who do this sort of thing (sendgrid, mailjet, mailchimp etc) but within our team we don't have personal experience of using any of them. Does anyone out there have any recommendations based on your experience?
