Given some of the rates in London for ruby work it doesn't some unreasonable. If the presentations, networking, or other benefits safe you as little as 5-6 hours over the next 12 months it's potentially paid for itself.
I could make that kind of positive net impact on my life and career just by avoiding Hacker News for a week.
