That's an awesome paper, but let's not make this about him. :-)

Somebody with that kind of way of thinking would be a good asset to the right commercial team, but the right commercial team would perhaps need to be the right gig more so than for people who are a little less academic. 

Leveraging an area that a candidate has a passion for (AI, machine learning, games, etc.), is a smart way to get smart people doing smart things. 

Stick them on a team looking after a simple B2C play with no data mining or research component, and they're going to get bored quickly, more so than somebody who didn't go to Uni and has just been living for shipping product all their lives.
