[LRUG] Follow up to last nights talk

Hi Steve & LRUG,

I tried to make it last night but got diverted at the last minute. Just
caught up with watching the talk and wanted to give my 2¢...

· I agree with the comparison between the PHP markets a few years
ago and the current RoR market. Interestingly Python is reminiscent of the
Ruby market 2 years ago and I predict a boom in Python contracting. Also
note that elite Zend/Drupal/Magento devs are still commanding day-rates
comparable to elite ruby devs and still finding work with the same amount of
ease.

· I agree with you on the influx of new Ruby devs coming onto the
market (I get multiple grads & PHP/Java/.net Devs looking to switch over to
Rails get in contact a week for guidance).

· I think that what you have missed out on is the room for new
adoption of Ruby-on-Rails by companies. The current market is primarily
being driven by start-ups. Eventually what you will see is more and more big
companies such as BBC, Sky, News International etc adopting and expanding on
their RoR usage.

· I think on the whole this balances out with the new developers
coming onto the market so upper-mid-level / senior salaries will remain as
they are now.

· Strong contractors will remain on the same rates they are on. They
will still be limited in quantity.

· The people who will get squeezed are the upper-junior level and
mid-level developers who are currently punching above their weight salary
wise or are in contracts. These guys should be senior by the time market
forces rebalance things so hopefully it won’t affect them, but I think in
1.5 years’ time there won’t be opportunities for this level of developer to
be getting and extra £10-15k in a perm role or will be -£100 in a contract
role.

· I’m starting to make my first few placements of Ruby contractors
in financial companies and the day-rates are higher than normal. If RoR
really takes off in the financial industry then we will all be very rich :D

Best, Louis

Subject: [LRUG] Follow up to last nights talk

Hey folks

Thanks for all the kind words following my talk last night. Quite a few of
you asked me to expand on a few of my points so I'll be sticking a detailed
blog post up this week along with the slides from last night.

It was great chatting to you lot in the pub afterwards and I hope you all
managed to grab at least one free drink on us.

As mentioned last night, we are still looking for decent Ruby folk so if
you're looking for work either here in London (we have an office across from
Waterloo station) or in Windsor, please get in touch. We're looking for both
contract and permanent staff and you can find more details here:
http://globaldev.co.uk/jobs/

Many thanks
