[LRUG] Lightning talks in February

Hi all,

As you may or may not know at our February meeting we give the entire thing
over to lightning talks. I’m budgeting for 10 minutes per talk so we’ve
got room for at least 8 talks with some time to spare for intros and such.

In the past we said that the talks had to be in the 20x20 format (20
slides, auto-transitioning after 20 seconds), but I’m dropping that
requirement this year. I think that format can be fun, but I was reminded
that it can be daunting to new speakers and I don’t want to put anyone off.

If you want to talk you’ll get 10 minutes in front of the crowd. You can
fill that however you want, but do take note that if you think you want to
have Q&A you’ll need to factor that time into your 10 minutes so plan
accordingly. Of course, you don’t have to fill 10 minutes, it’d be
perfectly fine to get up and regale us with your favourite 2 minute punk
song about Enumerator::Lazy and leave 8 minutes for rapturous applause :)

Get in touch with me directly if you want a slot and we’ll sort it out.
Don’t worry if you’re the 9th person to reply for the 8 slots; there’s room
at all our meetings to squeeze in a short talk. You’ll get to give us your
talk eventually even if you miss out on the lightningstravaganza in Feb.

If you’re at all worried about giving a talk for the first time (or even if
this would be your 20th time) do still get in touch. I’m more than happy
to help you prepare and rehearse your talk.

Similarly, if you know someone that you think has something interesting to
say, but who wouldn’t usually come to LRUG or feel confident enough to
speak maybe you can give them a gentle prod in our direction and offer to
help them prepare too.

Cheers,

Murray

ps. Obviously the last two paragraphs apply to all our meetings, not just
this upcoming February meeting.
