Good evening everyone,
I am writing an e-book about growing development teams. One of the biggest
challenges that our clients report having is a) hiring developers and b) keeping
them around. I am most of the way through writing a book about addressing both
of these problems.
The planned release date is June 27th. I am about 17k words out of a total of
roughly 20k words into the book so am fairly confident that this will actually
ship. You can pre-order the book here:
https://gumroad.com/l/KgVsd
(You can also see a preliminary chapter listing at that link, plus some benefits
of pre-ordering).
The book covers a lot of ground, but to get a flavour of the types of topics
discussed and my general approach, you can listen to my friend Patrick and I
complaining about hiring in this podcast episode:
https://thectoshow.simplecast.fm/6
Here are some reasons I might be an OK choice to write this book:
 * I have been a developer for a while and have changed jobs multiple times for
reasons that were well-defined, easily addressable and that you could benefit
   from fixing on your team.
 * I have directly sourced and hired eight developers into Happy Bear Software
and have been involved in the hiring process of more than double that at
   other companies.
 * Through our clients and friends I have the ear of quite a few other people
who are responsible for hiring, and have spent the past few years grilling
them about their issues and approaches.
 * A lot of people I talk to that run technical teams seem to think similar
thoughts to me about things to do with hiring. This means that my thoughts
have been sanity checked by at least one other person.

Here are some reasons I might not be a great person to write this book:
 * I have no direct economic incentive to make you better at hiring. The worse
you are at hiring, the more you need my company's services and the easier it
   is for me to hire.
 * Though I have attempted to be as neutral as I can muster, a lot of what I
advise (e.g. controlling for implicit bias in your hiring process, or
creating a safe place to work for all of your employees) is beyond the pale
for people with right-leaning political inclinations. If this sounds like you
then I'm more than happy to take your money but you may not enjoy the book
   very much.

 * I'm definitely less experienced in hiring than some of the other people on
   this list

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or would just like to talk
about hiring then I'd be happy to hear from you. You will make me super happy if
you pre-order the book also. Here's the link again: https://gumroad.com/l/KgVsd
Thanks, now go and enjoy the long weekend in the three days of sunshine we have
left!

I run a technical consultancy specialising in Ruby on Rails. Have a look atthis
one-page info sheet for a summary of the services we provide. We're always happy
to meet people building software, so if you think of anyone appropriate for us
we would appreciate being put in touch :-)
